SpongeBob Denies Reports that He's Gay

Sponge_thumb_1SpongeBob SquarePants lashed out at Christian conservative groups today after they accused him of promoting homosexuality and questioned the undersea cartoon icon's sexuality. SquarePants also requested that the tabloid media respect his privacy during what he called "a difficult time."

Cartoon icon calls James Dobson a “goofy goober”

By Russell D'Arby, Arts and Entertainment Correspondent

Spongebob_drivingBIKINI BOTTOM—SpongeBob SquarePants is dismissing allegations by a prominent Christian conservative leader that the cartoon icon is promoting tolerance of homosexuality among children and may be gay himself. Bikini Bottom's best-known resident is also asking the tabloid media to respect his privacy, and that of his cartoon sidekick Patrick, during what Mr. SquarePants acknowledged is "a difficult time."

This small underwater community has been under siege since last week when James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, condemned Mr. SquarePants for promoting a "pro-gay agenda." Dobson, who was in Washington DC attending various high-profile inaugural events, also attempted to 'out' Mr. SquarePants to major media outlets, noting that the cartoon star and his best friend Patrick are frequently seen holding hands.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy
Spongebob_clubDobson and other conservative Christian leaders are upset at a new video in which Mr. SquarePants and several other cartoon stars, including Barney, Big Bird, and Arthur, are seen singing and dancing in a "We are Family" children's video. The video, produced by the We Are Family Foundation, is intended to promote a message of tolerance and diversity among school children.

While Dobson did not openly question the sexuality of any of Mr. SquarePant's co-stars, Big Bird and Barney are both believed to be gay. The two are said to have been involved, until recently, in a long-term relationship. Neither of the characters consented to be interviewed for this article.

Dobson: meet ManRay
While Mr. SquarePants has made a point of steering clear of politics—he refused to endorse either President Bush or democratic challenger John Kerry during the recent presidential election—he took the unusual step of issuing a public statement in response to Mr. Dobson's allegations.

At a hastily called news conference in Bikini Bottom yesterday, Mr. SquarePants, who was flanked by Patrick, Squidward and Mr. Krabs, tried to keep the tone light, starting off the proceedings with a joke. "Somebody call the police! There's a pants thief on the loose!" he told the crowd. But the cartoon star appeared noticeably drained, and soon struck a more serious note. He reminded Mr. Dobson that "licking doorknobs is illegal on other planets," and told the crowd of reporters not to worry. "Tomorrow we'll be back for more frolic and fun."

Mr. SquarePants made no mention of his sexuality, but as he and Patrick were hustled off by Officer Nancy, Patrick was seen slipping his hand into Mr. SquarePants’ back pocket.

Sacred sponge
SpongeBob SquarePants is not the first cartoon character to come under attack by conservative Christians. In 1999, the Reverend Jerry Falwell declared that Tinky Winky, the popular purple Teletubbie, was probably gay because he carries a purse.

Sponge_dobsonWhile conservative Christian activists are hoping that their campaign against the cartoon figure will cause the We Are Family Foundation to shelve their plans for a pro-tolerance video, other Christian leaders seem to be distancing themselves from Dobson and his associates.

At least one prominent religious leader sprung to SpongeBob SquarePants' defense yesterday, noting that a sponge figured prominently in the final moments of Jesus Christ. "A sponge was basically responsible for making His last minutes on earth comfortable ones," says Roy DeLong, Pastor of the Spring Hill Baptist Church in Spring Hill, KS. "It's right there in John: 19: 'A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.'"

it's so funny when people who read these articles don't realize that this is a joke site. this is a hilarious article. I'm gay, and I think this is funny. But it's even funnier to read the ranting comments people leave when they think the article is truth. lmao

O MY GOD.... you people are a disgrace to all of the living thing on this earth. You cant even let a children's, CHILDREN'S, cartoon be aired on the t.v. unless it tells them how bad it is to be different. The show "spongebob" is a show based on complete and utter nonsence and if you cant see that how he acts is not a way to brain wash our children into being "gay", then you need to relize that it is an intirely fictional program. The government to day is willing to change everything so that one group of people arent going to be "offended" by something that is not even trying to be "offensive" as the "offended" like to say. The show is a diversion for kids to laugh and have fun while not haveing to worry about what could happen to themselves and whats not to say that the kid will completely shut out reality but mabye even see anouther side of it. Then when the parents see how the kids may see something that is different that what thier parents see in a situation they immedietly say that this is innaproprate behavior. The People that acused this cartoon of being gay and homosexual need a better grip on reality and a more stable idea on what is going on in the eyes of their child.

IS SPOUNGE BOB REALLY GAY OR NOT?

Posted by: SPOUNGEBOB_FAN | Jun 6, 2005 8:18:03 PM

Geez, is there anything people won't protest? Well, I laughed as I read this because obviously whomever wrote it has a good sense of humor, satire-wise anyway. Although there is probably some truth to it about Christian extremists wanting to protest the Spongebob cartoon, I highly doubt that the majority of this was to be taken seriously. For goodness sake, a press conference at Bikini Bottom and Barney and Big Bird involved in a relationship (rofl)? Anyhow, some of you'll probably remember that whole Disney fiasco with Daisy, Donald Duck and the three nephews sparking the moral issue. And I forsee the same ending; I highly doubt they'll anywhere with this. I mean come on people, it's just a cartoon. A cartoon with a goofy little yellow sponge intended for grade school children. And let me ask you this, how many children have actually thought or asked if Spongebob was gay anyhow? The thought never even crossed my mind.

Why is the church trying to shut down a cartoon instead of tackling issues that truly matter to people?

Spongebob is not a menace to society !!!!!! And where in the hell did they get that Squidward wants to be gay!!!Have you seen the cartoon? He just jealous that Spongebob is better than him in doing everything. Also, Mr. Krabs is not gay!!! Maybe he just adopted Pearl? And if you think he is bad because he is cheap then sue all the other damn people in the world who underpay their employees! And Sandy is not a bad influence! The girls who watch the show probably want to be and strong like her and you want to take that away from them?Dobson you remind of the big bully everyone you to hate.Always picing on the cuter people. Get your facts straight!!!!!

I agree that sometimes Spongebob can just be utterly stupid ,but that doesn't mean he is gay! I mean for just holding hands and being best buddys has no meaning of the word gay. If that's the case why not sue Winnie the Pooh and Piglet or little kindergarteners who hold hands with there friends who are boys! I don't see how Winnie the pooh and little children can not get in trouble yet Spongebob is getting the third degree.Besides my friend who is a Christian loves to watch the show! Does that mean he is Gay!?Not to mention if you cancel the show millions of kids will definitely riot. I know I certainly will!!!!!!

Bull. Shit.

What has been reported in this article is RIDICULOUS.

And since when are tolerance and diversity bad things?

And Big Bird and Barney.. in a relationship? Just.. no.

And a press conference in Binkini Bottom? What the hell?

i don't think that they should be able to do that to spongebob because he may be gay but he is still a kids favorite t.v. show probably top 3 and i don't think that they should beable to do that because he is a adorible yellow spongebob that lives in a pineapple under the sea and today i watched it and wached it everytime it came on and my little cousine she watches it and it still dose'nt matter i mean he's a regular humazn being like the rest of us and Chris has a gay agenda but he's still should have the rights like everyone else and there is no law saying that a gay cartoon charter can be kicked off his show because he was gay and no one will know if yaw'll keep yaw'lls mouth shut. that's all i half to say about this stupid situation.

Posted by: Ciara Bearden | Feb 1, 2005 6:36:33 PM

its a sponge! what if its gay? i think it doesnt matter. why r u questioning if a sponge is gay? isn't there better things to be worrying about?

Posted by: joe VR | Feb 1, 2005 5:45:01 PM

I just want to know why they have to pick apart innocent childerns cartoons...Sponge Bob and Patrick are both asexual...How do you then make them sexual...Pick apart something that deserves it!!!

Hey everyone, real sponges are hermaphrodites. Sponge Bob looks more like a misplaced plastic sponge in an undersea distopia.

Reproduction

Sponges can reproduce asexually by external buds that break off & form new sponges or stay attached to form sponge colonies
Gemmules are specialized, internal buds formed by sponges during cold or dry weather that can survive harsh conditions
Gemmules consist of a food-filled ball of amebocytes surrounded by a protective coat with spicules & released when adult sponge dies
Gemmules break open when conditions improve & the cells form new sponges

Sponge can also asexually regenerate missing parts or a new sponge from a small piece of sponge
Sponges are hermaphrodites (produce both eggs & sperm), but they exchange sperm & cross-fertilize eggs during sexual reproduction
Planula is the flagellated, free-swimming larva that forms from the zygote
Planula larva eventually settles to the bottom & attaches to develop into an adult, sessile sponge
